The mindset of someone thinking about launching a business is quite different from someone who’s merely content being an artist for hire. It takes risk taking, bold choices and courage. Initially, for first-time entrepreneurs, ignorance is bliss. But risk and failure analysis does come later!

No one is more qualified to speak on this subject than Niklas Jacobson, the Co-Founder of Important Looking Pirates (ILP)!

Important Looking Pirates (ILP) is a visual effects and digital animation studio located in central Stockholm founded in 2007 by Niklas, Yafei Wu, Carl Hermelin and Eric Hermelin. The studio has more than 200 artists and have worked on big titles like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker; and series like Westworld, The Mandalorian, Stranger Things, Lost in Space.

ILP was nominated for a number of Emmys for their work on Stranger Things and Lost in Space.

In this quick career talk, Niklas remembers what it was like to jump into entrepreneurship with little prior experience of running a VFX studio and learning along the way:

• The importance of believing in your own ideas;
• Risk taking and the responsibility that comes with being a studio owner;
• Fear of failure and other lessons of entrepreneurship.

Whether you’re a visual effects artist or thinking about starting your own studio one day, you will benefit from this content. So tune in – and get inspired!
