The travellers that ruined my mum’s last few months on also made us unable to sell her property due to their extreme violence, had the most expensive solicitor in the Uk.
My mother’s ancestors were Irish. Bad people everywhere. Good people everywhere. But The romanticism is sickening.

I'm afraid that the traveller community rubs up against the rest of us the wrong way. I have used traveller tradesmen a few times (wishing not to discrimin) and always been ripped off royally. Then there have been cases of them camping on a youth football field and leaving it ruined. Who would want an encampment next to their house?

I'm from the small northern English town of Appleby where the largest horse fair in the UK is held every year and attracts a huge number of Travellers Kinti and Roma people, for many years I supported the fair but in recent times the level of violence and animal cruelty has reached unexpectable levels.

When you have to work with them you see a not so nice nature. They have a reputation for a reason, brought on by their own behaviour.

My fella was a traveller and lived on a site most of his life and yet he is the most politest, hardworking, proper gentleman I've ever met, there's good and bad in every community, I've known non travellers as i am not one myself that have done just as dodgy and shoddy work as some people have commented about their personal experiences with travellers, they are almost just as discriminated against as indigenous Americans are and i know this because my grandfather on my mothers side was Niitisitapi and my biological father was English and Irish. P.s. Thank you, Choctaw nation, for your help during the famine.

They work seasonally travelling around the US repairing roofs and paving driveways. However, they have a horrible reputation of leaving jobs undone or using inferior materials.

Modern travelers are VERY different than the ones in the pictures. Look at the way they treat their animals!

The traveler way of life has ended, especially since they stated collecting the dole. They should settle down and stop making a nuisance of themselves. If people don’t want them around, it’s because they are obnoxious and violent.

And we all lived happily ever after, the end. What nonsense.
I, like the vast majority of Irish people, treat as I find. There are many honest, hardworking, polite and genuinely nice travellers in Ireland and individually they can make great company in a pub or while you are out for a walk. However put half a dozen of them in a pub, public street or housing estate and suddenly they think they own the place. No respect for the law, always looking for a row, and if it isn't nailed down it obviously belongs to them despite being someone else's property. If they are not trying to fight complete strangers for no reason whatsoever then they have no end of family feuds to keep them busy.
If you don't believe me, then visit any Irish town centre on a weekend night and see for yourself, or simply sit in a district courthouse for a day or two and watch the proceedings. They appear in court play the I'm from a disadvantaged minority card, the judge gives them the benefit of the doubt and tells them to put some money in the charity box and be good for a year and within 6 months the whole charade with the same defendant and same judge plays out again with the same result. No compensation for those that had property stolen, no remorse for the stress they put their neighbours through and as long as this continues nothing ever will change. they seem to think their 'cultural identify'' makes them immune to any law.
I find it strange that travellers on social welfare can afford, €100, 000 mobile homes or RV's while still iving in a council house. afford to drink 3 nights a week, have high end cars and spend tens of thousand of euro on weddings and funerals. Where does all that money come from?
And that is why most Irish people will avoid them and will not employ them.
The change needs to come from within their own community, and not the whole country adapting to their 'way of life'.

Irish Travelers are not off Roma (Gypsy) origin. They are racialy identicle to the rest of the Irish.

A group of travellers camped on our local recreation ground. Due to previous experiences all the shops and pubs closed. It cost the local council a considerable amount to clean and sanitise the field and repair damage, Though there was a family whose child went to my child's school during and he was always welcome, though he never appeared at senior school. Irish or Roma there is not much to choose between them in my experience.

Interesting. Although its much more complicated than this suggests.

Most of your pics are of English Romani. The first picture is of Sir Montague "Cocker" Smith, a well-known Romani man from Yorkshire..

I don’t have a positive feeling about travelers. My great grandmother was a traveler and she had a very negative impact on the family, which took well over a generation to overcome. Fortunately, at the time, good catholic priests were able to drum out the systemic corruption from the family.

Well big surprise that they're not a separate racial group with all the redheads and blondes. They're exactly the same as the rest of us but their chosen lifestyle makes it impossible for their kids to go to school and this is the problem with their cultural identity. Maybe there is some way to save some of it but they have to stop travelling and let their kids become part of mainstream society and get jobs later in life. There's no point in complaining about how they are viewed until they start to fix this. In Ireland we all came from humble origins and I'm sure they're as capable as any of us of climbing out of it if they stop turning their face against it.

I was born in 1962, Baltimore Maryland, and I knew from an early age, handed down in the "Family Story", (well before tv and the internet), That we were from Baltimore Ireland; had Tinkers in our family back in Ireland, and were thrown off our lands by the British when we refused to cave to their confiscations. Eventually we Driscolls were betrayed by our neighbors, the Sullivans, who were rewarded with our lands and castles. We have many Doctors and Lawyers in our family. When we returned once in 2002, Cork City - I saw a tinker family outside Bradleys grocery (another family name from Donegal, along with Driscoll again), - like Magic a family of tinkers were outside that were beautiful to me, it was like looking into the faces of of my older relatives - smiling Irish blue eyes, red hair and fair skin with freckles. They were a very coy, alluring and shy family when I said Hello. I assume the tinkers of say, 1950 and before, were true Irish blood tinkers and the ones today have much outsider blood, including dark skinned Romany gypsy - who I guess essentially came in, seized on another groups better reputation, initally proffited from it, and has now blended and changed it for the worse. Also other outsiders as well have assume the identity. "It's not the same" like other commentators here have noted.

The bias of this narrator against the non traveller Irish people is astounding.

This is loaded with contradictions to the point of incoherence.
You are simultaneous condemning the government for "marginalizing" the travelers and condemning the very policies that would stop this "marginalization".
Housing, health, education, employment are all made worse by an itinerant lifestyle. The government didn't "marginalize" them, a nomadic lifestyle has been marginal not just since the invention of the industrial economy but since the invention of agriculture.
