America’s Founding Fathers decided when they wrote the Constitution, that it was imperative that the center of government was not in a state. The US Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of U.S. Congress; the district is therefore not a part of any U.S. state. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of our Capital District. The Democratic party's intent to make DC a state is a power grab, political maneuvering and disingenuous to the citizens of the United States and requires a constitutional amendment.

Packing the Supreme Court was just a warm up.

NO !!
There is a reason it should remain a federal area. All the federal employees should not have a unified hold on the legislative process. They should role the area into an adjacent state if they want to have those rights. Control of additional Senate seats is a bad idea.

Wonder if they’d have passed it if they thought it would turn out to be a RED state?🤫

If they have no representation than they shouldn’t have to pay federal taxes.

I think I like the idea of just “50” states.. but if we were to make a “51” state, I really believe Puerto Rico should hold that title... either make them a state or let them be a actual country.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So wait, DC has about as many residents as North Dakota but can't get statehood?

Can see why they are doing it... budget currently controlled by congress and they have no representation. And it had a time defending itself against the insurrection. But it was set up in the constitution.. Madison in Federalist 43... his reasons.. " Nor would it be proper for the places on which the security of the entire Union may depend, to be in any degree dependent on a particular member of it. All objections and scruples are here also obviated, by requiring the concurrence of the States concerned, in every such establishment."  Presents another form of vulnerability... the seat of power being vulnerable to the state in which it resides as opposed to having it's own borders. He goes on " The indispensable necessity of complete authority at the seat of government, carries its own evidence with it. It is a power exercised by every legislature of the Union, I might say of the world, by virtue of its general supremacy. Without it, not only the public authority might be insulted and its proceedings interrupted with impunity; but a dependence of the members of the general government on the State comprehending the seat of the government, for protection in the exercise of their duty, might bring on the national councils an imputation of awe or influence, equally dishonorable to the government and dissatisfactory to the other members of the Confederacy."   ... so their's that.  Haven't heard a single comment on the constitutional reasons it was established... poor reporting.

In my opinion, I oppose this move by the Democrats to make the District of Columbia a state. First of all, it would expand the size of our government too much.

For DC to become a State, Congress would have to call for a Constitutional Convention for an Amendment to the Constitution revoking DC being set aside as the nation's Capital first, Washington DC is bakedinto Article 1 of the Constitution. This involves cutting up Article 1 (which has a lot of content baked in) and would be difficult at best.. Then said Amdendment proposition would have to be ratified by no less than 38 US States. That would free up Washington DC from the Constitution. Then likely that would dissolve the land area of DC as an existing place while reverting the land back to the State of Maryland. Then Congress and the President can do WTF they want to -- but before it can be finalized the State of Maryland would also have to approve it as well. sicne the area that comprises DC is originally land from the State of Maryland. The bigger issue here is the Constitutional Amendment part -- good luck with that.

The country’s capitol isn’t a state for a reason...this is an irrelevant waste of time.

Here are 19 cities with a higher population than Washington DC. Should we make all these cities states too? New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, San Jose, Austin, Jacksonville, Fortworth, Columbus, Charlotte, San Fransisco, Indianapolis, Seattle, and Denver. That just by population. Washington DC is ranked 125th when it comes to Population Density.

So another unbelievable waste of time by our Congress. Who's surprised?

Retrocede it to MD (minus the mall and Federal buildings) DC definitely deserves representation, but this is an obvious power grab

The Federal District is carved out of Maryland and should be returned to the State of Maryland .

A view from Canada. I'm looking forward to the day when all people in the USA are treated as equal. It may never come. It would be great to see this begin by having Washington DC, Guam and Puerto Rico become States.

I support DC Statehood and representation, but maybe an alternative will be to give DC residents the ability to register to vote in a state of their choosing, and be allowed to vote by mail, just like the politicians whom live in DC, but are registered to vote in the state that they represent!

Give the land and citizens back to Maryland and Virginia! Easy negotiate the exchange for DC statehood for Texas Independence! 🇨🇱🤠 Keep it at 50 states... but wait...DC doesn't have the gdp of the 9th largest economy in the world. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
