Is This Cannibalism?

Medical cannibalism is the practice of treating diseases by consuming human remains. It's... gross. And weird. But also, it's fairly common all around the world, has a long and weird history, and you might have done it yourself.
A content warning may be necessary if you are squeamish about these kinds of things.

Finally, a lighthearted video I can watch with the family.

This videos viewer retention must be 100% - “you might be a cannibal” is the single best opening hook ever

Years ago my ex-wife had a gum graft done to fix receding gums. They used cadaver tissue and one of my daughters pointed out that this technically made her a cannibal. My ex was NOT happy about this thought.

Mothers sneaking food for their children is tragic. Reminds me of what my mother would do. Aside from, you know, the cannibalism

I recently went to Cairo and an Egyptologist I met said potentially 90% or 95% of all mummies have been exported for medical purposes.

You talked about everything except fecal matter transplants, they've started to show some promise as a medical technique recently too. At least, considering the rest of the video, it wouldn't be considered too disgusting to mention XD

I've always thought about the whole scifi "aliens are scarry" trope, and I try to imagine being an alien, discoverring humans, and seing some of them cut parts of their deads to put into each others, and how scary we would look. Surgery and transplants are crazy (and cool)

A different level of "keeping your loved ones near and dear."

As a pharmacy tech that moved to a specialty pharmacy we had a whole section of drugs made from human plasma that people infuse for lung conditions and infections.

as an egyptian i find that the idea that half of all mummies found were ground up and eaten incredibly sad especially considering the fact that many of those mummies were stolen from us

"Ow I cut my finger. It's bleeding." (sticks finger in mouth).

Detective: "Who among you killed them?"

Cannibal 1: "I didn't kill them.
Somebody else did.
I just ate them afterwards."

Cannibal 2: "Yeah I didn't kill them either.
I was eating them alive."

When I was a little kid, I saw "Long Pig" for sale in the open air meat Market in Benin (circa 1963).

8:56 - The irony of vampire plagues and fears of blood drinking Must've been a lot of mirrors back then.

I think eating a departed relative as a way to protect their bodies and keep them close is super sentimental. Like, I get that emotional humanity thing. In a way it's kinda sad they had to stop doing it.

I use to work in Irian Jaya, the villagers told me the stories of cannibalism. But they had stopped for 10 years by the time I got there. Really difficult for them to understand electronics. But it was an education on how people lived thousand years ago.

I never thought about a medically necessary transfusion as cannibalism, but it sorta is. My semi-rare blood type is sought after, and I donate when I can. Sometimes I'm rejected for low iron or whatever, and it makes me feel shameful. Weird, never thought about it that way.
