Chris Farlowe and Julie Driscoll - Knock On Wood (1968)

From a rarely seen TV special called “Innocence, Anarchy and Soul”, here’s one of my favourite Hammond players, Brian Auger, with his trinity backing Julie Driscoll and Chris Farlowe in 1968.

If you look closely, Brian and the Trinity are actually miming! That is most evident watching Clive Thacker (the whacker), drumming, where at one point there is a tom fill that he doesn't play. As was typical at places like the BBC, the Musician's Union rules stipulated that the band re-record the tune (i.e., not mime to the original record), so they could be paid performance fees.

I think this was a 'fun' thing to do in the eyes of the director, though most likely not the musicians. Still, good fun - take it for what it is - and nice to see Julie and Chris together. Check out her face at 16 seconds in! She’s obviously having a laugh. Chris is clearly setting himself up to be the inspiration for Austin Powers!

Two of the best voices of the sixties in a duet. Great. 🌟❤🌟
