I think it's shock; just a response to a traumatic event. The idea that one man (Oswald for JFK) or a few men (9/11 hijackers) can drastically change the fate of a country or the world in just a few actions, over the course of a few hours is legitimately terrifying to a lot of people. I think it's the same mindset behind "false flag" conspiracy theories; you mean to tell that one person can kill that many people in just a few minutes? One minute you're talking to a loved ome; the next you're on a passenger plane barreling towards the twin towers, or cold and lifeless on the floor of a movie theater as paramedics tend to the alive person next to you.
