I used to think the best way to tarp a roof was using the grommets, in this video we show a better way to to tarp a roof to keep the wind from tearing it off.
The right way to tarp a roof and keep it from tearing.
Tarps in general are only good for winds under 20 miles per hr. However if you have any chance at all of keeping a tarp up during sustained heavy winds, installing boards as battens is the way to go.
Many years of installing tarps has taught me that the grommets tarps come with will not hold in wind. There is to much direct pressure in one area. The tarp will tear away from the grommet.
Use scrap strips of plywood from your job-site or use 1x2 battens or any thin scrap wood. Place the wood over the tarp and secure the wood with screws or nails. I prefer screws for easy removal. The screws will penetrate the tarp on the sides of the structure being protected. The batten will put pressure on a larger surface area of the tarp preventing it from tearing.

Good video but what type of screws are you using and what length of screw do you recommend? Also, what distance do you recommend between screws on a scrap of wood ie) every 6 inches or every 12 inches of scrap wood? Thx!

I agree. I use 1x2s all the way around, but I need to tarp a clear polycarbonate porch roof connected to the house. I can't walk on it without breaking it more. I can pull it up with rope and pray it doesn't rip, but when I get to the flashing (on top where the house meets the deck is a 6" thin metal piece that goes over the polycarbonate. How do I remove those screws? I need to hover over the roof. Any suggestions?

okay correct me if I'm wrong cuz I'm not familiar with this process but isn't part of the process to seal it off from the wind so the wind can't get underneath the tarp and blow it up at all???

i swear i just binge watched numerous roofing videos and every single one had a barking dog in it. i love dogs but they are overpopulated and a nuisance to society when they are outside barking all day
