What a brilliant presentation by Anima Anandkumar! Her exploration of AI's role in transforming science and engineering, especially in applications like medical catheter design, is truly enlightening.

According to her, the world's problems are solved. She lost credibility at 3:18 when she said that her operators could zoom into any detail. The limitation is set by the pixel's dimension on the CCD camera and optical effects; zooming into details is a physics problem, which she may have solved using a mathematical formulation that factors out effects, not some magic of her claims.
LIGO's raw data still contains effects of seismic, optical, thermal, CTE, etc., but they can see the gravitational wave signal after mathematically subtracting each of these effects until they cannot explain the remaining effect except the signal from gravitational waves.
She is overreaching about what AI can do.

Does neural operators achieve better performance than full 3D direct numerical simulations (DNSs) yet? I am curious to know (I have read the Pathak+ paper with much curiousity but wasn't able to obtain a definitive answer myself)

Just curious why can’t we run some simulations to verify before printing the design? I agree that AI can propose the designs but I think we should carefully simulate the process to a certain accuracy before printing it out? Especially for something expensive to build 🤔
