This Is Weird For Nintendo

Over the last 5 years Nintendo has been building up a library of games for their online service, quietly reaching a number of games for the basic tier that seems almost too good to be true at it's current price.

Im on the boat where I think having both purchase and sub options should exist as they both have pros and cons and strategies can be made to make either option enticing for the user

The sub option can still exist as a sustained revenue stream, give players immediate access to a large selection of games without nuking the wallet and can serve as a way for users to give a trial run of a game.

For the purchase option, they could make it enticing by giving the user access to the games whole soundtrack to listen to through the console and/or via their mobile app and bundle it with themes. If in the really unlikely case they really took it further then adding additional enhancement like a proper widescreen support, higher fps support etc would be a nice bonus

Granted this is extremely unlikely to ever happen but a guy can dream

let me just buy and "own" yoshi's island and paper mario on my switch without the online pls. That's all I want and im sure many others feel this way.

Honestly, why not offer both services? Either buy titles or just pay the subscription fee for all of them.

NSO is a online service that offer retro games to make up for the lackluster online. I want good online with the option to own some of these retro games.

It's just funny how we were all worried that we had to keep re-buying the same Virtual Console games for multiple platforms to the point that Reggie assured us Nintendo was looking for a solution, only for them to come up with a way to charge us forever and ever to access them.

Classics games, even more classic Nintendo.

I'm 48, so I grew up on the NES and subsequent nintendo systems. I actually got my switch after learning I could play all those games from my youth for a yearly fee. As time went on and they added DLC's for Mario Kart and Animal crossing it made it even better. My point is, if all I had on my switch was the classic games I'd be happy, I mean we're talking about NES, SNES, N64, N64 17+, Gameboy, Gameboy advanced and Sega. That's a shit ton of games for $50/yr (or $80 in my case for the family plan). I hear people bitch and moan but for $4/mo what do you want and I just been talking about the higher tier subscription.

To be honest, I'm not really happy that John is trying to convince Nintendo to raise their prices. He's framing it like "this is undervalued and they really should charge more for this so I expect a price increase". I'd rather see him framing it like "what a great service and value, you should subscribe". I mean it seems like he's more worried about Nintendos' loss of profits than sharing a great value with consumers. The whole angle just feels like he wants them to raise prices and they should, instead of focusing on the great value and why you might wanna give it a go.

If the actual online service they want me paying for hasn't improved than it's not worth it.

Don't forget that these are old retro games and most people are only going to be interested in a select few, if they even play any. Some people just want the cloud saves. I think your perspective is someone who really appreciates retro games, where many mainstream consumers might not care as much.

You didnt even mention the game trials we sometimes get. I fully beat Captain Toad Treasure Tracker without ever having to buy it. They recently did KOTOR.

You also get DLC to MK8D, ACNH, and Splatoon 2 included.

I emulate all these games on several different platforms, that being said I still pay for NSO and I love it. The excitement of seeing what’s added next is most of the fun.

At the end on the day, the Wii still surpasses anything that NSO has to offer and that was two generations ago. I would much rather pay for individual games with more variety from other publishers and still be able to play them offline, then have a fixed library that Nintendo offers 🤷‍♂️

I have basic tier and never play any of them.

I wish nintendo focused on making a quality and stable server(s) for their platform. It's just not worth ever playing online unless it's a super casual game.

I'm still a Splatoon player. So I need access to online servers. The bonus of free retro games on the go is satisfying.

Nintendo ... Please carry over this online service to the next console and make purchases from the Switch be available. It would suck if they started over again.

I am more worried that these nso games won’t be available in the future and you will lose your savedata along with the games

Honestly I’ve been really impressed by the classic games selection. The SNES, N64 and GBA games are particularly great
