From Johor to Penang is a journey of around 650KM and a car journey of almost 8 hours with lots of fuel needed and road tolls on the way.

A coach takes even longer but is less stressful.

Taking a train is the least appealing journey from Johor (from a time and ease point of view) as it's a long arduous journey and there is no such thing as a direct line, and a surprisingly ridiculous only four trains a day from JB Sentral to Gemas (a 4 hour journey) before you have to change trains to go on to Butterworth (only one train a day and a further 7 hours) and then from Butterworth a Ferry across to Penang Island.

Or... You could get the train to from Gemas to Kuala Lumpur (2 trains a day and a 2-1/2 and then onwards to Butterworth (6 trains a day and just over 4 hours) and then the ferry across to the island and who knows how long the waiting time for each leg of that would be.

So by far the quickest and easiest option is to fly from Johor directly to Penang so.....

I am flying from Johor to Penang. It takes just over an hour and I paid less than Rm100 for my ticket (less than the combined train journey) it's a no brainer.

But first as with all journey's I need to fuel up, join me!

When I was very young in 1970s. My late father drove from kluang to georgetown in the annual Chinese new year pilgrimage to see my grandparents. It was crazy as those days there were no highways, the car has a fan (no AC), and we stopped at the jungle roadside (with streams) to eat and refresh. I have no idea how fuel is added most likely in small towns like Ipoh, seremban.
