I have always used dry news paper to clean the chimneys . Crunch it up then wipe the glass . They shine like new

That's a nice little collection mylady ☺️. Have some myself, about 13 storm Lanterns, some saved from the trash and brought back to life with a lot of TLC.
Found a lovely old German made tablelamp today at the local thriftshop, it has a beautiful blue glass oil reservoir on a cast iron foot. Just cleaned it.

Don't be afraid to light them, the chimneys are replaceable. You may have had a small crack in the glass that was unnoticed and the heat of the flame expanded it. Most hardware stores sell replacements. Sometimes thrift and resale shops have vintage ones.

I bought 3 kerosene lamps this week on EBay for emergency purposes like you said. Maybe I’ll have a collection too one day🤠☝🏾

Sometimes the prongs on the burners are too tight. The glass expands as it heats, breaking the chimney. You can bend them with pliers to make slight adjustments. They should be snug enough to hold the chimney in place, but not too tight, to allow the glass to expand and contract with changes in temperature. That's my guess at what might have happened.

Glass will beeak if there is a tiny scratch. It happens in water bath canning too. Jars explode. In that case it can happen because someone crazed a spot by using a knife ir spoon against the side of the jar. So somehow the chimney had a scratch, from a ring or who knows. If you placed it on a surface that scraped it. The heat made it break. No need to be afraid nor spooked ir whatever. Just a simple explanation.
