Stop using the sand block that comes in your drawing kit for this! You're ruining your shading stumps / tortillions! These are great tools for sharpening colored pencil, graphite and charcoal!

How many of you were told in school to use hairspray on your art? :P

I use it to grind my charcoal sticks into powder. Then, I use a paint brush with the powder to shade.

When i first bought oil pastels i also bought a paper stump set including that sandpaper-stick cause so many tutorials on youtube recommended it (i don't use them for blending my oil pastels anymore, i use them for charcoal now) and every single tutorial: "If you want to clean it or want to have a pointy tip again, just use this sandpaper"
So i did and was so sad that all the paper stumps were basically ruined and unusable anymore after doing so. So i thought: "Maybe i'm doing it wrong?"
Some research later: You DO NOT use sandpaper on paperstumps. Lesson learned, new stumps bought and i use the sandpaper for sharpening my charcoals now :D
It is just sad that so many tutorials out there are just copy pasted and so many basically tell you to ruin your art supplies, even if they are cheap. Nobody likes to throw away cash.
Quality content as usual, love your videos ♥

You are full of surprises, totally didn’t expect you to have your lawn mower in the kitchen. Lol 😂

That end needs to be a clip of its own. So great!

That mower probably worked great on the shag carpet in the 70s lol

I love the example at the end. It really solidified the point

I use blending stumps for colored pencil and solvent as well as graphite/charcoal. If the tip becomes frayed I use a pair of fine sharp scissors to gently remove the fray.

I was taught to use it on my pencils. We learned, back in the early 70s, to sharpen our drawing pencils with an exacto knife. Fortunately I still have all of my fingers intact 😜 Now I use a regular pencil sharpener.

I'm currently studying illustration and that's just what my teacher said to use as a cheap option to seal our works... 😂 Your are SO RIGHT! This video made me laugh, it's hilarious! Thanks :)

In old school drafting the sandpaper blocks are used to sharpen the pencil lead used in compasses.

That was good - as a pastel artist I just save all my tortillions or stumps by color - use them over and over again! And I use the sand paper to sharpen my pastels - i also use regular sand paper fine cut up in smaller squares to sharpen my pencils - love your ending Lisa!!

Somewhere in the house I'm living in is a portfolio full of drawings I did in junior and high school, all yellowed from a nice even coat of my mother's White Rain hair spray. lol
I love my dirty blending stumps! I'm guilty of deliberately dirtying them up and using them instead of pencil for a soft and even look. If I need one relatively clean for detailed blending, I'll just flatten out my kneaded eraser and roll the blending stump over it.

The sandpaper & sandpaper sticks are a must have, when you manually sharpen your pencils (I find manually sharpening charcoal & drawing pencils, still the best method for those mediums).

I love the lawn mower. That brought back memories. That was my first paying job 70 years ago. I mowed lawns with a push reel mower similar to that. It was a lot of work, mowing, racking, and bagging - but I did make a dollar - sometimes two.

Great video Lisa. I never thought about using those sandpaper blocks for sharpening colored pencils. Wondering who the heck was that one person (at the time I'm writing this) who disliked this great video.
