There was another discovery: Before the damaged copy was found, a complete music score was found in a German university library. In the margins were notes of which scene was on screen, and how long it was! At last they knew the names of all the missing scenes, and how long they were! This is from the 2010 DVD "The Complete Metropolis".

The Art Deco sets are stunning. The movie is truly groundbreaking and a work of art. So many iconic images- and so many direct influences that can be seen in movies being made 100 years later.

The robot in Metropolis is what got me into science fiction movies from an early age. Even today, I'm still amazed with the robot's beauty. Truly a classic work of art.

The effects in this movie are spectacular, and not just for 1927.

Every new generation should be made to watch this film. It is timeless in every sense: as relevant today as 100 years ago. And simply brilliant. Artistically, emotionally, technically brilliant.

Ever since I discovered German Expressionist cinema, I felt such an incredible connection, especially with 'Metropolis'. I finally saw the reconstructed version recently, and the magnificent beauty of this piece literally brought tears to my eyes. It should never be forgotten or underestimated, the extent to which this film has informed and inspired modern film making.

Critics at the time called Metropolis "cold and soulles"? Well, maybe that was exactly the point behind mechanical visuals?

This movie was way too ahead of its time

"Visually Stunning, but Cold and Souless."

Those are the same complaints that the critics
would have for "Blade Runner" 46 years later...

I am absolutely obsessed with this movie and have watched it many times and I never tire of it. I consider it a real work of art and appreciate what it must have required to complete it. The feelings these silent actors pervade are mesmerizing and I enjoyed this video very much and Kudos to you for doing such a great job on it~!!

The "Machine Person" WAS the inspiration for C3PO. George Lucas verified that.

Take my word as an early German film scholar: Metropolis is meant to be timeless, as the story of repression and redemption never begins or ends but always exists in society. That’s despite Von Harbou’s later Nazi affiliation, which ended her career.

Metropolis was so ahead of its time. Fritz Lang was a cinematic genius. Amazing video Minty Sir!

Now 95 years old and still one of the best films ever made. Metropolis biggest problem was its release date .... about 30years to early. Today you can see the brilliance of the movie. Also in 2022, Big Finish audio plays made a Doctor Who episode on the filmset of Metropolis. The 9th Doctor (Christopher Ecclestone) visits the movieset to guide Fritz Lang into the right irection. If you havent, i recomand listen to it I will not spoil it, just one phrase "What? Your robot is the most iconic character in movie history"

I watched it the only way it should be watched, in a silent cinema with a live orchestra playing the score. Just awsome.

Have a cat who really enjoys watching TV, normally lies curled up half watching and half dozing. When I got the Metropolis DVD, it was on was the only time I've seen her sitting completely upright, completely riveted to the screen for pretty much the duration of the film. Still have photos of her from that night sitting spellbound in front of the TV with the film playing :)

H.G. Wells wasn't infallible, he also called Joseph Stalin the most fair and honest man he'd ever met.

I saw the 1984 Giorgio Moroder restoration at a small "art house" theatre and loved it. Much later I saw the 90s restoration, which had an entire extra 30 minutes added back in. What a shock. A MAJOR plot point that had been missing was, WHY did Rotwang have Maria try to destroy the city? It was because Joh had stolen the woman he loved, married her and had a son by her... before she died. He wanted REVENGE. Imagine that getting lost.

Something I find maddening / hilarious... in the '84 restroation, there's a title card that reads, "Maria escapes" and you see her running out the door of Rotwang's house, with no further explanation. In the 90s version, it says that Joh went to see Rotwang, who told him what he was REALLY doing-- and a fight broke out, alowing Maria to escape! But the scene itself was STILL missing. Years later, I read that in the "almost full-length" version, that specific scene is STILL missing!!! Outragious.

I'm not ashamed to call this one of my all-time favorite films! Also; bonus fact, another country that has been majorly influenced by this film is Japan. There are tons of anime that pay homage to this movie in one way or another, including another classic & personal favorite; the 2002 animated remake/tribute 'Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis'.
