Let me start of by clearly stating that the South African tourism and hospitality industry is neglecting South Africans, let me explain..

Ok you’re back from your holiday and you’ve likely started to count the costs neh…it cost a little more than what you expected neh …

For years, South Africa has boasted stunning natural beauty, diverse cultures, and world-class tourism experiences. But the questions that have for some time been bubbling under are that these tourism treasures now becoming a luxury only for the wealthy?, are these experiences even meant for both local?

For example a growing segment of hotels in Cape Town who are targeting foreign tourists almost exclusively and thus its becoming increasingly unaffordable for South Africans – middle class and up. This is particularly true of the V&A Waterfront, which is said to be looking at pursuing a strategy of owning more and more of its hotels going forward.

For context:

In 2023, total expenditure incurred on domestic trips was about R57,9 billion. day trip spending amounted to about R20,2 billion and overnight trip spending of R37,6 billion.
2023 Total expenditure was mostly driven by high expenditure on ‘other mostly undefined spending’ (R13,6 billion) followed by shopping (R11,7 billion) in 2022, while in 2023 total expenditure during domestic tourism trips was mostly driven by shopping (R18,6 billion) followed by domestic transport spend at (R17,9 billion).

As a South African, right now, I dont even bother with Cape Town. Zanzibar, Mauritius, Thailand, and Indonesia are my best values for money.

If they are pricing and earning in foreign currency, they need to also pay their workers in the same currency.

One day South Africans will wake up and realise that South Africa is no longer for South Africans. South Africa is fast becoming for the rich South Africans, western foreigners and also dirt poor African foreigners who serve as labour. Regular South Africans are being pushed out of cities and in to the rural as you see the trend of big houses in rural areas. This is the future of SA. Cape Town is accelerated on this because of the DA. The DA has no concern for the working class, only the wealthy. Their only goal is ‘progress’ not upliftment. Progress to them is becoming an extension of first world Western countries, screw who gets left behind. Funnily enough, those same first world countries are becoming unaffordable for their own citizens which is why they’re coming to SA and CT specifically. Turning SA in to the same extreme capitalist hell hole they are running away from.

The answer is, and will always be capitalism and financial gatekeeping. These people know who they want and who they don't want in their spaces

Cape Town is nice but in December it's chaos and not worth it, unless you a socialite. Drive 100km in any direction and you will find holiday gems. The Cederberg, Breede River Valley, Garden Route, West Coast and everything inbetween, all offer much better value and the people you will meet are incredible. Wes Kus Bes Kus.

It was literally cheaper for me to travel to Thailand for 2 weeks than staying in Cape Town for a week. It’s crazy how expensive Cape Town has become

Exactly what i have been saying, one of the reasons I started Ilanga Nature And Tours to cater for locals so they can travel and explore their own backyard at an affordable way and access what has been made inaccessible for them.

Never was I the brightest in school, but I've always known that discrimination is bad until money gets involved.

I went to Cape Town and spent more in hotel costs than I did in New York City and it’s the whole country, because we did a coastal tour.

Im working in hospitality industry in Cape Town, I've witnessed this greediness by establishment and it turns off a lot of tourists

Even as a South african living in the UK and bringing pounds on holiday time I cant afford most what Cape Town has to offer anymore, I look at budget hotels and free experiences. Some of my South African family and friends only earn R20, 000 per month, so they are priced out of Cape town completely

Having relocated to Cape Town 9 years ago it was a shocker of a lifetime! The rentals are insane! It's sad that a middle-class family with two children can't afford to live in a proper house. They need to be crammed into a two bedroom apartment because the prices are just too high! As I've said before, they can just rename Cape Town to "Sister of Monaco" because it's THAT expensive! 😢

Fix Durban and Cape Town will become less expensive

I’ll never forgive CPT, back in 2020 they were begging us joburgers to travel and the prices were fair but now we being priced out 5:40

I'm 100% sure Zambians and Zimbabweans are crying the same cry about the prices at the Vic Falls 😅😅😅😅😅.

So they are pricing out locals who contribute the most in tourism while prioritising digital nomads who are not bound by anything if they want to leave?

Thats self-sabotaging

Keep in mind that other coastal cities have become less popular as tourist destinations for the SA middle class because they have been ruined by years of bad ANC governance. So there's a reduction in supply of tourist destinations and increase in demand.

The department of tourism should interven they must force hospitality to reserve set amount of space for local rates, otherwise SA must just get passport and just explore our neighbouring countries

Honestly the whole of South Africa, is very beautiful, there are many beautiful places you can visit in every province, many local people suspect that Capetown is a bit overrated, my aunt who has been to Capetown twice says that the beauty of Capetown is just a rumour

As a SAn in Netherlands I see the flight prices to CT are 2x more than the same distance and time to Canada, USA and Mexico. So thats where I spend my money.
