Wouldn't it make sense to build the houses at the back of the map, but with 4-10 tiles of spaces for trade? This way the trade is protected. You don't really have to move any unit past this wall anyway

I know I’ll never be an AoE pro, but I now have a new benchmark for how good I want to be, which is “able to carry unrelated conversation with my opponent during a fight” 😂

You can always go for the wonder victory to force him to cut the trees to get you.

Also, you should build a house wall for your trade carts.

That makes the houses far back in your base and protecting future trade carts
