This lecture introduces XML as a core specification upon which key geospatial interoperability standards are based. It then describes the KML standard as a model for encoding both geospatial data and information about the representation of those data in a standard format that is broadly supported by diverse applications. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS) Standard is presented as a method for accessing visualizations of geospatial data from remote servers and the model for integrating WMS services into KML for efficient delivery of dynamically generated map images into mapping clients that support this feature of the KML standard is introduced.
