In 2017, the Berklee Indian Ensemble presented a landmark collaborative concert with its fifth Artist in Residence, Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal. The Ensemble is delighted to share an excerpt from that evening: a reimagining of the 1962 classic, “Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha”. Presented here with just four musicians — Ms. Ghoshal, lauto player Vasilis Kostas (Greece), violinist Layth Sidiq (Iraq/Jordan), and tabla player Giri Subramaniam (India) — this simple but soulful interpretation was performed in tribute to one of India’s most iconic voices: Lata Mangeshkar.

About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of the largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally; presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and contemporary music; and has collaborated with various world-renowned artists, garnering over 180 million views for their viral videos to date.

I'm an old Jazz fan that has been Shreya's #1 American fanboy for the past ten years. At 36, she is already the best pop singer who has ever lived. Duke Ellington once described Ella Fitzgerald as "beyond category." Shreya is a genius that is difficult to quantify, especially given we Americans don't understand any of the ten languages she commonly sings in. She is a musical Rosetta stone, can sing any genre, any tempo, shred complex beats, sing with great feeling, her lower register is deepening as she matures, she is now in her prime. Beyond category? Duke had no idea what he was saying. Thank you to Berklee for creating a community that appreciates Indian popular music and gives it the attention it deserves. When will American music fans wake up?

Usually singers take away all the praise in a performance. But here the instrumentalists are taking it to the next level.

Listening to this rendition, I had tears in my eyes. Remembering my grandmother who on her dying bed didnt remember our names but used to sing this song flawlessly with all the lyrics. We miss her a lot. May she rest in peace.
