Thanks, David! I've used the manual panorama method for shooting individual (static display) aircraft at airshows, and had great results, showing far more detail than I'd get with a single image. Definitely going to do some landscape experiments this winter. Take care!

i think i saw you doing this before with a 200 mm lens. Did you?

In post you could also separate areas depending on how far they are and then do a 3D composite in After Effects, Fusion, Nuke, etc and use a 3D virtual camera to do the blur based on physics

I don't get it. The parallax error in that stitching is off the charts. Doesn't the Gigapan offer entrance pupil adjustment or did you just not bother setting it up? I see in the final 6x6ish image you cropped out the lamp that was split sideways but you can still see the window frame split. Not to mention how distorted the perspective is overall.

Super clear explanation. Had seen an explanation before but nowhere near as clear. Tank you for the very interesting tutorial. Do you have a video somewhere describing how you stitched the Obama photo? Did you take 2 or 3 images at each location to handle the heads turning. Just thinking about that stitch and what a nightmare it was at each border. I’ve had similar challenges with stitches but mine were only a few frames of challenging borders, NOTHING like your Obama photo.

Great way to teach this technique. I will use this video when people ask how big can you print and still pixel peep to death because you added the Gigapan link.
Thank you, Sir

What Aspect ratio has medium format, how do I crop It just like a medium format? I tried just now to make a panorama och 3 photos In portrait orientation and got an almost square image.

If it is so important to have medium format to take truly professional images why does online and offline media and the art world seem to be willing to at least consider using 35mm?

Want the medium format the easy way? Just the match field of view and aperture. Medium format 645 Crop = 0.62. The famous 645 medium format lens is the 80mm 1.9/f. So lets get an equivalent.. 80mm * .62 = 49.6mm. 1.9/f * .62 = 1.178/f. This is an equivalent to a 50mm f/1.2 on fullframe. All you need is a 50mm 1.2/f on full frame and you have the medium format look of the famous 80mm 1.9/f

Um...If you want the medium format look, why not just shoot medium format? You don't see analog shooters trying to mimic digital! All of this trying to make digital look like film is stupid. Just shoot film if that's the look you want!
