I had a very poor day and to come home to find a Mitre 10 video made the day about a thousand times better than it was.

To help some others decide on this project, I priced it all up, using Mitre 10 NZ. The total was $541 and that does not include all the basic tools he used. If you owned nothing that was used or required in this video, then you would easily be up for $700.

We just built this today! Great video, made it so easy. Mitre 10 has been sold out of the Firth Ezi Blocks it seems at most locations but we were able to pick them up at Bunnings. One improvement over the design in the video I would recommend is leaving one or two bricks out at ground level to create some air flow, for a hotter fire and less smoke.

edit: The price about a year about when I made this was closer to $800-$1000 NZD

Here I was thinking I just needed 12 rocks and 2 wood.

The way I whipper-snip my edges, those pebbles would be scattered all over my yard. My mower would find them though. 😂

Dont take my word for it and look for ypurself but, You are allowed fires in Auckland on private land for cooking such as Hungi umu or lovo it needs to be less than 2 meters squared. You must have water and 4 meter clear area around it. Search open fire laws Auckland NZ easy as.

Mmmm, - are "Firth Easy Wall" retaining wall blocks - manufactured to construct low level retaining walls - fire proof or will they be safe at, possibly, high heat levels & not explode????
+ in Auckland this would probably be deemed an incinerator & illegal???

We’re not allowed open fires on this side of New Zealand. Southside Mangere

@Mitre, thank you for making this excellent video, and for providing easy instructions.
.
That being said, I only have one complaint. You employed the communist measuring system, ooops, I mean the metric system. As such, I must convert everything to inches and to feet. Sheesh!

The Mitre10 in Melbourne don’t have these rocks 😢 would be so much easier if they did. And no Bunnings do not have them either. Miss Mitre10 in NZ

Why do you need 5min advert in the middle of my playlist... -_- I can mute the ad, but I am in the middle of my own DIY job and having to go to the trouble of getting out of my gear to skip it makes me very annoyed.
