We are truly in a Platonic age. No one wants to be restricted by their body.

But culture will eventually react, and put too much emphasis and restriction. It’s how it always goes.

Only this time, I fear, the restrictions will be according to evolutionary psychology, which is pretty harsh toward the ladies.

Love Dr Borgardus. He's very careful with his speech. It did not escape my notice that he said "sex is binary", which is less controversial than "males cannot be women" or "females cannot be men". It's much more likely for two people with opposing views on sex or gender to define terms the same when speaking about sex than when speaking about gender, at least these days.

Here's how the comments will go

1) Pro-gender ideology individuals will bring up confusing cases ("what if theyre intersex? Klinefelter syndrome? Turner syndrome? Other chromosomal abnormality?")

2) use those confusing cases to muddle clear cases ("it seems it isn't so black and white! Just because vast majority of men have XY chromosomes or male organs doesn’t make them men! Seems 'men' has a looser definition! Hehe!")

3) use confusion of clear cases to push social engineering ("we should just let people change sex if they want! A man is someone who identifies as a man! It doesn't affect you, why do you care? A man should use a woman's bathroom if he wants! Men should compete in women's sports!")

Already seeing it. This is a pretty common pattern for how progressives operate in general (abortion, euthanasia, etc)

I have mixed thoughts on this which actually mirror my though on race.
Basically gender is a culture (a construct) and sex is a biological description.

However, I dislike attaching attributes to gender. I wish this would end.

Ok leaving behind the social aspect intersex people exist from birth.

The dictionary definition of intersex is: "noting or relating to a person, animal, or plant having reproductive organs, genitals, hormones, or chromosomal patterns that do not fall under typical definitions of male and female"

Sex is not binary. Binary, by definition, means two options with no exceptions. Computer programming language is binary. There are 0s and 1s and that's it.

Biology is too complex for that in the real world.

You might _"think", _ that sex is binary.
But nature does provide here *intersex - nonbinary* counterexamples.
To declare of thinking sex to be binary given those counterexamples is to declare of being ignorant.

Why appeal to dictionaries? You can also appeal to dictionaries to find that “female” isn’t necessarily a biological term. Also, if all dictionaries defined “woman” as a socially constructed gender role then you probably wouldn’t change your mind about it.

I go by the definition that a man is a biological male, and a woman is a biological female. The difference comes in with masculinity vs femininity. Though I’m curious how different philosophers would define it.

I guess I could see defining a man to be a male that is masculine, or mostly masculine. That I could see. Then a woman would be a feminine or mostly feminine female.

Definitely agree on the binary part. Gender is binary. No other sensible way of viewing.

"I think sex is binary. That's my view" This is objectively false. It's not just an opinion I disagree with, this is at odds with the scientific understanding of sex. Even if we ignore all the social aspects of gender and just focus on biological sex it still isn't binary and we have known that for decades. Sex is bimodal. It is a large spectrum where people generally tend to fall in one of two categories, but not all people do, and even among the ones that do there is plenty of variation. To but it in the simplest terms: Do you think every man is as masculine as every other man? Of course not. Some men are taller than others, some men grow beards while some don't ect. And none of this even needs to get into any kinds of mutations or things like Andro-insensitivity. Sex characteristics can vary from person to person and mean different things to different people. Saying stuff like "There are only 2 sexes and they're entirely determined by chromosomes" is very reductive and quite inaccurate when you get into the details of it. Then adding arbitrary social expectations and norms onto the already made up and arbitrary binary division of sex and forcing people into them, pretending they are objective and unchangeable, is not just wrong, it is outright harmful. That's why every credible medical institution agrees that sex and gender are different and that allowing people to live as their preferred gender is a net-benefit to those people.

1) He was talking about gender and then went straight to sex.

2) He talked about man being adult human male. Never defined what man is.

3) He talked about manhood but never really got in to that.
