It took me weeks to realize it was Gillian Anderson playing Margaret Thatcher.

This makes so much sense! I was watching her in the fall and blown away by how good her accent was, which is uncommon for us actors.
And this applies to me too, I lived in the uk till 15 but with American parents…my accents goes back and forth depending on where I’m at and I don’t have much control over it.

yes for certain, if anyone lived wearing two coats its her. But in essence its really not her fault as she's a person who pretty much grew up on both sides of the pond. And its her love of the UK though being born in the US that has her to lend more towards the traits of a brit. in fact her unique look and mannerisms are liken most to a woman from the UK. thats the tid bit that always made her come across unique and special.

This is pretty common in the US, I think. My family is a huge melting pot of people from all over the world, and we all speak differently depending on which part of the family we're visiting.

French Canadians are quite good at picking the European standard when they settle in France. The two dialects are as different as Scottish and Texan. What I didn't realize was how flimsy their English was, despite living in an English speaking country.
