Robert Devereux was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I during the Tudor period and he rose to prominence as the Earl of Essex. He was a very wealthy and powerful man across Elizabethan society, and was also known to have been a feared soldier. He was a leading member of the Queen's court but he led a rebellion against Elizabeth which was known as Essex's rebellion, and for this he would fall from grace very quickly.

One of Devereux's greatest flaws was his actions in Ireland in which he was sent to put down a number of rebellions, however he actually ended up agreeing a truce with the Irish rebel leader, and for this ended up being banned from England for this. When he returned he came back to find that his position had changed drastically and that the Queen was furious with him. She saw his truce as a dereliction of his duty, and for this he was placed on trial.

During his trial and house arrest, he began to create a plot to force a meeting with the Queen and to get her opinion on the matter. He staged a rebellion inside London which planned to march into the city to force the Queen to talk with him, however he was quickly declared a traitor and his rebel army abandoned him. When he retreated his mansion was besieged and then Devereux was arrested. He was thrown into the Tower of London, and later on he was executed inside the walls of the Tower, being of noble birth he was spared a public execution on Tower Hill.

The fate of Robert Devereux is very interesting, as he was a man who seemingly had everything, but his end was rather tragic. So join us today as we look at the 'Downfall and Execution of Robert Devereux, The Earl of Essex.'

His rise and fall is fascinating. His arrogance is just baffling and it’s incredible he survived as long as he did.

This is the same earl of essex who drew his sword against Elizabeth after she boxed his ears for disrespect and entered her room without permission while she was half dressed. His arrogance and pride were astounding and the fact he survived as long as he did is kind of incredible.

The Earl of Essex had it all-- but he was too self-absorbed to realize that there were limits to Elizabeth's patience.

I think it was dangerous for any man to get too close to Elizabeth.
I think he was out of his depth in Ireland.
In the end he probably thought the Queen would forgive him anything.

Devereux also had a perchant for breaking royal protocols and Knighting various noble men under his command in Ireland.
One of those men just so happened to be my distant grandfather, a grandson of the Earl of Rutland.
According to the sources and records Devereux Knighted him TWICE in 1599!

I live near Chartley Castle - The childhood home of Essex and where Lettice Knollys died aged 91. What a different world it would’ve been had Elizabeth I lived to that age.

Just got recommended, and I really like the fact that your videos go into those stories that seem to be a footnote, but that they always seem to just say a little bit about in every book. Well met. Edit. And am assuming ergo the title🤦‍♀️. And I’m going to take a wild stab and say that Elizabeth was furious that the man she loved married a younger, prettier version of herself cousin. And poor woman trying to replace Robert with a younger version of himself.🤔.
