SALOMON SENSE PRO REVIEW | The Ginger Runner

Last year I had the privelage of testing both the Salomon S-LAB Sense Ultra and the Salomon Sense Mantra. The Mantra would go on to be one of my favorite trail shoes of 2013 (I still run in my old pair from time to time). Well, Salomon seemed to want to make that shoe better. They went back to the drawing board and created a shoe that combines the best of both worlds: The Sense Pro.

The shoe features all the great things about the Sense Mantra's outsole and midsole material - some of my key "likes" from that shoe - and combined them with the amazing S-LAB upper from the Sense and Sense Ultra. The result is an incredibly comfortable shoe that wraps your foot in granite-gripping greatness. Tons of traction, a nice responsive midsole material, a flexible and light upper and the quality I have come to expect from Salomon.

Really the only negatives involve stiffness at times, durability issues and shoe narrowness. All factors that I have been able to look past because the shoe simply makes me smile. I look forward to running hundreds of more miles in my pair of Salomon Sense Pros. Let me know in the comments if you too have run in these or any of Salomon's shoes.

I bought this shoe for trails and hiking but I ended up wearing it the past 2 years as my main golfing shoe. I have never found a golf shoe that I have absolutely fell in love with, but I feel that this is the ultimate golf shoe even though that is not's it's purpose. I Played 36 holes in one day which took up almost 8 hours in this shoe and my feet didn't hurt or were tired. This is a great shoe and I still wear them for golf.

Been wearing the sense mantras for about a year now exclusively at the bike shop I work at and loved them all the way! Great feel super comfy and very light. Just got the s-lab sense 3 ultras last week and have done three runs of varying terrain; snow, rock, ice, and a little mud etc... The ultras are wicked! Used to super minimalist shoes that aren't much more than rubber flats and these are giving me the same feel with a lot more cushioning.

Great review on a great shoe. As a lover of both the Sense and Sense Ultra, I use the Sense Pros for easy/recovery runs and anything that's like door to trail with a bit of pavement. But I've noticed they fit about a half-size larger than the other Sense line shoes (ie. I went for 11.5 instead of my usual 12) so be sure to try them on!

Thanks for the great review. I was stalking them because of your review and when the Salomon Outlet put them on clearance I couldn't pass on them. They are awesome. People need to try them on. I ended up with a size 10 instead of my normal 10 1/2.

Great review! I'm working on my second pair of the Sense Mantra, the first lasted just over 350 miles and the current pair are at 168. I LOVE the Mantra... but with this review I will seriously look into the Sense Pro.

Really good review. I run in a pair of Mantras for trails and Kinvara's for road. It is stiffer than the kinvara but it is responsive like the kinvara. I love them both

Own a pair of S-Lab Ultra3 SG with massive lugs. So brought the Mantra 2 for dry trails but the sides of the toe box pinched my foot, horrible fit - returned them and got the Sense Pro - never looked back - great shoe and great value on sale

I LOVE the Sense Pro. They are my second pair of trail shoes and I am absolutely sold on Salomon. I had a pair of Saucony Peregrine that I loved but quickly blew out the toe box running really technical and rocky terrain here in Central Pennsylvania. The Salomon Sense Pro have held up on that rocky terrain. Like you said, they feel GREAT. I just love slipping them on and hitting the trails. I love how easy it is to tighten them once I've run a couple of miles -- I'll never go back to laces! AND I got them for $60 on clearance at my local Outfitter. After 150+ miles they're starting to show some wear and tear, but I'm thinking of just finding another pair online. They should be cheap since they are an older model now. I know this is an old review but THANKS!

Love the mantra! I'm on my second pair, and wear my retired pair as my daily walk-around shoes. Gonna use my mantras in my first 50k next month!

Just following up on your review....I am a major advocate for Salomon products....So far each pair of my Sense Pros have separated at on the front toe welds. However, with that being stated the integrity of the shoe isn't degraded. So if anyone is thinking about the Salomon Sense series....go for it!

Still have newish pairs of this shoe. Wore them last night and had forgotten how much I love the feel through the foot. Feels almost springy when bouncy down some more technical stuff. I wish I could still get this shoe. I have every model of the sense pro and they dont compare. Side note, I have a very wide foot and I love the fit of these.

Salomon Sense Pro review:
I have heard very good things about Salomon shoes and I was very excited when I go these shoes. I ran 75 miles in them including a couple of 3 hour runs and loved them. They became my favorite trail running shoes (taking over Brooks Cascadia). I wore them in my next 5 hr long run and noticed third hour into the run that my right toes in one foot did not have any cushion! I took the shoe out and saw that insole slipped backward towards heel! I thought it was weird. I adjusted the insole and continued running. I noticed the same thing with toes in other foot. I had to keep adjusting insoles after that and was frustrated. I was training for the first 50 miler and wanted to wear them during, but after my bad experience with insoles I went with other shoes. I was still optimistic and wanted to like them. So I wore them again in a 4 hour long run. And same thing happened. Insoles keep slipping backward towards heel! That was it and I was done with theses shoes.

I like to rotate between few pairs of shoes and put on ~120s mile on them in 9 months. Fortunately I bought them from REI and they took them back even after 9 months after I purchase them.

Ah I loved that Pokemon reference. I usually don't agree with your taste on looks, but I must agree with you about this shoe. I love the look of this one. I am a fan of your channel, and you always make me want to just go out and tackle those trails, especially the ones I've hiked on already back in my Boy Scout days. But unfortunately I can't for I am running competitively in college track on cross country. One day though I will go and run it, and run those trails and marathons. So to the fellow SoCal runner, I'll meet you one day at the start line of some race.

I love your reviews. This shoe is definitely intriguing, and Salomon's trail running reputation is solid. I'm interested to see how The North Face Ultra Trail shoes compare to the established trail shoes.

It's been three years. I thought for sure I could snag a (2nd) pair of these for under $80. I cannot. Dammit. I love these shoes!
