This is Military. They was trained to be strong in physical and Mentality. Any torturing (if it's not dangerous that can threaten life) was given so they ready when they meet the Enemy.

It was cruel? Then ask to the world why War is Scary and Hellish? They Trained to Defend their Nation from any possible threat so the need this Training. If they got injured that threatened their life in this training, Military wasn't a monster. Their Training will be stop for a moment until they all healed up.
