Diffraction in Action

Diffraction is an effect that occurs when a wave hits a barrier with an opening in it. The result is the wave fans out on the opposite side of the barrier. Diffraction occurs when the size of the opening is roughly the same size as the wavelength of the wave. Wavelength is the distance between crests. Diffraction occurs in all wave phenomenon, be it water waves, sound waves or light waves. This is a beautiful example of diffraction from ocean swell hitting a barrier with an opening about the size of the wavelength.

i guess this type of diffraction is call Fresnel's diffraction cuz the aperture(assuming part between the rocks )acts as secondary source and gives the wave in spherical as every point in the wavefront acts as a secondary source for disturbance, as we can see.
