Art Nouveau was a highly decorative art movement started by the new middle-class, which established itself in cities throughout Europe and the United States at the turn of the century. It was a genuinely cosmopolitan project of modernity that existed in all sorts of media, forms, scales, and geographies. Everything from architecture, interior design, decorative arts, fashion and graphic design was influenced by this new art. It was literally new since the term Art Nouveau is a French word for "new art."

So what was so new about it? Let's find out!

I loved Art Nouveau all my life, especially as a teenager during the 60's, when it was stripmined for band poster imagery and album art. I see in this excellent documentary that the influence of Art Nouveau fell off at a period just as the automobile was taking over the world. I would have wished, I guess, that a few of the artists could have taken a whack at early automobile design. Who knows what they might have produced? Cars that looked like dragonflies or geishas?

I got to see one of Mucha's actual posters on display in a museum, and NOTHING prepared me for the staggering SCALE of the thing. We're so used to seeing them on monitors and our phone screens, but these things are TALL. The women are basically life-sized. It was overwhelming in its splendor, and the feeling I got looking up into her serene face has stuck with me to this day.

To me for some reason, not only the beauty of organic shapes and floral themes and beautiful women, but the sharp contouring... I just love how strong the contours are, usually we are advised to not employ strong contours in fine art and idk. I love art nouveau for it

Honestly, Art Nouveau does not really feel 'old' at all. Many of the most famous pieces have a very modern feel about them, despite being a century old. It's rather like a blending of the classic and modern. I have a tarot card deck that is done in this style, and there are times where I just marvel at some of the pieces. I really would love to get some wall prints.

I love that art nouveau is inarguably celebrating the feminine. And that the female forms it celebrates are not unrealistic or unhealthy - but natural and elegant.

Art Nouveau is immortal because it represents the perfect marriage of realism and aesthetic, exemplified in my opinion by the work of Mucha, and later J.C. Leyendecker. In my view this blending of realism and appeal make it the highest form of modern art, but I'm probably just saying that because Mucha is my favorite artist.

I LOVE art nouveau. Not just the 60s, but the originals. I'd do every room in my house with the wallpaper and tiles if I could. Deco leaves me flat. Pre Raphaelite is very nice. But Nouveau has my heart.

I am a fan of Art Nouveau, and have been forever (teenager in the 60's - go figure) but when looking for images on line it isn't unusual for Nouveau to be merged with Deco. I know there are similarities, but the Soul of Nouveau is completely different from Deco. I'm glad you made the distinction in this video. Very interesting, Thank you.

There is definitely something magical about the art style. He has that colorful, vibrant look that just makes you feel good looking at it.

I don't find myself engaged into viewing and studying Art Nouveau, but what I am impressed by is Klimt, the son of a jeweller, masterfully combining his delicate and elegant portraits of women with decorative patterns and gold, making the whole piece less of just a painting and more of an adornment of sorts, like a piece of jewelry.

Worth mentioning that there were several distinctive branches of it, which looked very different to each other.
Even within every branch there is such variety that could be almost unrecognizable the fact that they belong to the same style. We can think of Modernismo Catalán, or even Gaudi itself has a huge diversity.
Then we can think of German Jugendstil, Austrian Viennese Secession (so geometrical and goldish), Bavarian Munich Secession (greco-romanian and goldish), Hungarian Secession (lots of flowery and colourful forms), Italian Liberty (classic, heavy and sculptoric), etc.

I found a Liberty silk scarf in a charity shop, and the design just shone through the grime in the fabric....washed it when I got it home and it is just stunning! Nothing touches Art Nouveau for me.

I love Art Nouveau stylings. I'm definitely a sucker for the idealized feminine form and setting it in nature has, I think, kind of a universal appeal. Maybe that's from strong influences of the 1960's-70's in my impressionable youth.

I can’t help but think that its core attraction is that same thing that draws many to boho styles. The movement, colors, and busy patterns will always be welcome to a certain large percentage of people, whether it is popular or not.

I have been obsessed with Art Nouveau for decades. I collected Muchas Posters when I was a teen and still have many. A truly beautiful genre.

Mucha is actually so good. I feel like his style would fit right in with current digital artists.

When you look at architecture whether it be from the Middle Ages, Art Deco or Art Nouveau, it most certainly is unmatched by the ubiquitous glass and steel of today.

I've just discovered about this Art Nouveau (literally 20 min ago) and I am absolutely in love with it! I've been asking myself why I did so long to discover this art style, It's majestic!
