Music:
From the Preludes No. 12 in G. Sharp minor and
Prelude No. 8 in A Flat major, by S. Rachmaninov.
Played here by Moura Lympany
Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street is one of the oldest in Moscow originating in the Middle Ages as a trading route leading to Volokolamsk and Novgorod and was known as Volotskaya Street (eastern half) and Novgorodskaya Street (Western half). The name Nikitsakaya comes from the Nikitsky Monastery that was located on the street. The Monastery was founded by the grandfather of Mikhail I, the first Romanov Tsar.. During Soviet times, the monastery was destroyed and renamed Herzen Street "The Grandfather of Russian Socialism"!
The Moscow Conservatory is located in the street. The building the Conservatory occupies was originally the mansion of Princess Yekaterina Dashkova, a close friend of Catherine the Great .
Further on is the Mayakovsky Theatre. Originally called The International, it was established by the actor and impresario Georg Paradiz in 1885.
I complete my walk at the Greater Ascension Church, started in the 1790s by Matvey Kazakov with funds provided by Prince Potemkin; after 1812, the church was redesigned by Joseph Bove and completed by Afanasy Grigoriev in the 1840s. Alexander Pushkin was married i this church.
