Sound design is built on deception — when you watch a movie or TV show, nearly all of the sounds you hear are fake. In this audio-rich talk, Tasos Frantzolas explores the role of sound in storytelling and demonstrates just how easily our brains are fooled by what we hear.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

How about you people actually watch the video? He talks about how sound design is manipulated/created in post production.

Which is completely true.

I wish sound designers would get a bit more creative with sound. I'm sick and tired of hearing the same squeaky door, shocked audience, and wilhelm scream in every single movie.

0:51 - as a sound engineer myself, I can say that all three have the sound of bacon frying. Studio monitors and years of experience say so. Still watching to find out... EDIT: Aaaaand there it is at 0:55. Dayum!

Had a guy lecturing about sound effects at my uni once.
Specifically he showed some clips of wild seals and proceeded to explain how he had made the sounds for this nature documentary. You think those are sealnoises you hear on Animal Planet? It's actually a man grunting.
The most graphic image I have is from how he explained how he oiled in his stomach and repeatedly smacked a concrete block against it to imitate the sound of the fat seals moving across the wet rocks.

I think it's a cool introductory video about sound design. I actually want to learn more about the subject since it will be very important to some of my projects.

"Loudness needs silence." That is basically the idea of the HDR sound used in video games based on the Frostbite engine. Before and after an explosion or similar loud events the soundtrack is dialed down so it seems louder.

The irony of a sound engineer not knowing how to wear a microphone properly without sounding distorted and with excessive puffing and breathing sounds.

At first I thought this was going to be a video about all the historical/scientific/logical inaccuracies, both accidental and intentional, in movies and television. This was a pleasant and interesting surprise.

Next thing you know, they'll tell us that fiction books can't be believed.
