Looking at the thumbnail with all the models of R-series droids is like looking at the catalog of i-series phones. Constant new models, some dramatic changes, but mostly the same things with minor “improvements”.

Chad R1s don't even need to be small, they're just so epic that they require a whole ass quarter room!

I would like to mention the H-1ME Battle Mechanic droid, a small affordable droid that looked like a Buzz droid that didn’t need a starfighter socket. I would also like to to mention the S19 Astromech Droid which was a sad attempt by LesTech to get in on the R2’s success.

When I was writing Star Wars fan fiction, I gave my protagonist an R5 which he kind of bonded with as they had both felt that the world looked down upon. The smuggler actually spent enough money to purchase a couple of R2s on his R5, often adapting parts originally intended for R2s. About the only issue the droid still had was its personality matrix, it was sharp tongued sarcastic and had figured out how to swear in droidspeak.

These Droids are the Droids of Star Wars. And we all want an R2 unit for ourselves. Don't lie, we all do.

Interesting to note that T3-M4 was capable of calculating hyperspace coordinates thousands of years earlier.

Though that may not have been standard for T3 units. It was custom built and likely saw many modifications over the years as it served with Revan.

I really enjoyed this breakdown of the famous R-series astromech droids. Makes me think that there should be a video breakdown of all the protocol droids released in the Star Wars universe and not just the 3PO series.

Ah the good old Astromechs. They have served every faction very well, especially those that were loyal to the Jedi. I mean who could forget R2-D2 for Anakin, R4-P17 for Obi-Wan, R6-H5 for Kit Fisto, R7-A7 for Ahsoka, R7-D4 for Plo Koon, R8-B7 for Windu, and R5-B8 the OC Astromech I made in my head canon for Jedi Knight Dass Jennier.

I like the R3 best purely because I like seeing the inner workings of machines, and having a clear dome head is super cool since you can see it's electronic brain in action.

Astro-Mechs were absolutely vital for the usage of space travels and repairs in the short package.

I’m a fan of R2 over the R8 for the most basic reason the radar dish was retractable where the R8 was on the side of the dome and looks like it could be shot off or even broken off.

Another advantage of the R2 model was an extensive catalog aftermarket parts to customize with and a thriving modding community to increase the versatility of your astromech beyond what was intended.

When the movie came out, I was fascinated by R2D2 and I always loved his desing. In 1977/78, it looked so futuristic, it was something never seen before.

The R9 was also a specialist model. It was meant for Jedi Stealth-X fighters.

Love the little (and not so little) guys. Their legs make no fucking sense what so ever but they are such cute plucky loyal bots.

Ironically, in the first film Episode 4 (and i believe the entire original trilogy) all these types of droids were simply referred to as "R2 units" (except for R1). Its why Luke calls the red R5 an R2 after its motivator blows up. The name changes started with Kenner Toys. In order to market the above mentioned anonymous red droid, they renamed it R5D4 in order to sell it as an action figure. Renaming most of the other droid types in the original trilogy came much later.

I've always liked the R3, that transparent dome is just so cool to me. Reminds me of the clear-cased electronics that were popular in the '90s.

Going off of aesthetics, the R6 is my favorite. It's got the iconic look of the R2 but with a bit of a unique flair in it's truncated cone head

R2 unit: Bro, my back is hurting from carrying this for so long.
R8: Do not worry brethren, I, your younger sibling, will carry the family name from here on out.

"becuase it would heresy, if true."

Got a chuckle out of that.
