I just had s revelation as you did the slaps incorporating the heel of the hand.
It's almost exactly something you need to do with conga drums too.
And it is when you start to marry the dry bones of notes with rhtyhms that really can tap into how folk dance particular ways: heel/toe/slap/tone (toe being finger tip in percussion)are the three keys to afro/brazilian/cuban percussion.
It ain't any different for any instrument that has a folk dance root to it.

Also, that extreme style of slapping style you can generate when you incorporate celever heel hits interspersed with toe/tone, appears to be that trick that Willie Dixon does on that single with Chck Berry, and Memphis Slim ''We're Gonna Rock'' when it hits Willie's so good it is talking the p*ss solo?
