The reason why Ethiopia survived is mainly due to the fact that it managed to form good relationships with the colonial powers surrounding it while playing them off against each other
For example the British wanted to invade and occupy parts of Ethiopia at some point but the Ethiopian king convinced the French that was bad for them so they decided to fight the British in the Battle of Fashoda which helped Ethiopia stay independent and even grow in size.

The horrific famine was “Man Made”implemented to create confusion, conflict, anger, etc... among Ethiopians. Plus: Ethiopia had been denied to “sell” her limited resources or “buy technology” to improve farming. Finally, farmers were prohibited to transport food from one location to another- though in spite of it all, farmers had produced enough crop to feed people in the limited drought area.Thank you for sharing

I think the biggest 3 reasons why Ethiopia largely was able to avoid colonization by the major european powers were, 1.) Lack of natural resources in comparison to other areas of Africa 2.) Ethiopians were more unified therefore Making it harder for the european divide and conquer method they employed elsewhere on the continent and world 3.) Ethiopians were Christians, practicing Christianity long before europe..
