Frank Bridge (1879-1941) wrote "Lament for Two Violas" in 1912 at the urging of his viola teacher, Lionel Tertis. The original manuscripts of "Lament" and another short companion piece, "Caprice for Two Violas," were lost. A draft sketch of "Lament" was later found in the library of the Royal College of Music. With the help of fellow violist and composer Paul Hindemith, Bridge was able to reconstruct the piece. He and Hindemith performed it together.

The seven-minute piece opens with one viola introducing the main theme, which is repeated throughout the piece. Both voices share the musical material equally, engaging in a dialogue of increasing agitation before coming to a quiet, peaceful close. Though the title "Lament" suggests grief, the character is more thoughtful than sad.
