I have RB600 and RB600A units that I only just updated to 7.4.1 recently, and I believe those routers were EOL sometime late 2011... Amazing that they still compile updates for the old PowerPC based routers they had back then! :) Kind of why they are still my go to router these days!

As an architect for The largest networking company, I absolutely LOVE and use Mikrotik for the sole reason there are no subscriptions/licenses . I have converted all my friends and family to Mikrotik. As long as there are no licenses and subscriptions I will continue to use and sell Mikrotik over all products!

I think that's kind of a "downgrade" in modern businesses that they sell the product but then you also need extra licenses to use the product you already paid for.
Glad MikroTik is down to earth and doesn't use cheap tricks like that.
Allows home users and enthusiasts alike to use and experiment with the devices without having to shill out lots of money each month or so to get that one feature you want to give a spin.

It would be best explained that MikroTik devices require a RouterOS license to be able to use all the features, however those devices come preinstalled with RouterOS and a license allowing for full usage of the device out of the box. However if someone was to build their own router from scratch and wanted to use RouterOS, they'd need to purchase a separate license for it.

I used 2 L4/P1 keys on a single device, installed VyOS, reinstalled RouterOS and guess what, I need a new key.
Thanks Normis

Mikrotik: no licenses required
Internet: <full of content regarding mikrotik licenses>
Me: confusion

I assume the licensing is for "advanced features", but these days you never can be sure what's considered as an "advanced feature". Why do those licenses exist in the first place? I'm sure there's a purpose and I'll probably find it elsewhere, but I find it hilarious to have video regarding licenses claiming that do not worry about it when clearly licenses do play role in some cases. I saw a comment that suggests that the licensing is explained on some other video on mikrotik channel, I'll look for that and maybe that's going to give the actual answer to the question of when a license is required

Edit: found the information, still wishing that the software was open

no license unless you install/use a CHR would be the correct answer ;)
