in this video we discuss the difference between taking turns attacking each other, I'm responding to your opponent in a fight.

in good choreography, each combatant responds to the other's actions in a way that is a logical both martially and from a storytelling perspective.

in bad choreography, opponents take turns attacking each other because that's what the choreographer said to do.

A swordfight is like a conversation. You can't really talk while the other person is

Whoever said that doesnt know the concept of timing an attack. More important, doesnt know you need to respect the weapon of your opponent. Good vid

Parry and respond is the basic for most forms of fighting in cut-based weapons.

I sincerely hope that you guys get a call for a movie or TV show soon. Your choreography conveys a story that is so much clearer to the untrained eye when seen by comparison. Exaggerating pauses or breaks in fighting for dialogue is permissable suspension with direct conveyance in swordplay. Seeing a miniature story told by how people fight is poetry in motion that I can't wait to see on the big screen

This video is as valuable for real combat learning as for choreography!

Fights have a tempo. It’s why in boxing for instance you hear “1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4”. The difference is what the intent of that tempo is.

The alternative to this is both striking eachother at the same time, which in unarmed you can make beneficial trades, with weapons this often leads to two dead people. Which is realistic in it's own right if you want two characters to die at the end of the fight.

Also sometimes it looks more like longer turns because people take breaks from attacking. Which is real because fighting is really tiring, mentally and physically, so people take time to gather themselves sometimes.

That's like calling arguing "taking turns saying words"

This is how I like to invision fights in D&D. Yeah it’s turn based, but when it’s a one on one or three on one, you can envision your player parrying, blocking, attacking, and getting cut as well.

People who say "you're just taking turns attacking" have never done fencing. Sometimes in Longsword I panic and we just do yielding parry oberhau until someone throws an unterhau lol

The Revenge of the Sith Choreographer must have been on some good shit to make it that good.

I always thought of is as "bouts". A series of strikes without a pause in the action is a "bout". Say you have 2 combatants, Red and Blue: they both move in and throw a strike. Blue blocks Red's attack and then ripostes, which Blue blocks/evades and moves out of range, just for a second before reengaging. That moment before they reengage signifies what I think of as the end of a "bout" when it comes to swordplay/hand-to-hand combat. Whenever there's the slightest lull in the action, that's a bout.

This is science!!!!

And thanks, it was very good knowledge

You both could also spin and twirl your blades behind your backs for a few seconds at the same time.
It's apparently tradition for battles to the death (or triple dismemberment) between Master and former Apprentice.

Some of my friends are really into Tekken, like hardcore into it, and a few other fighting games too. One time we were hangidg out they told me fighting games basically a turn based games but really fast, and if you don't think about them that way you will get punished hard and often. From the way he's talking about it, it sounds like that applies to real fighting too

I like his swaordsmaship. I really want to learn it now but I am too lazy to do it so I guess I'll just keep on liking it☺️👌

This is my constant rant, no truth in choreography. Quit twirling swords and reverse grip is only for Filipino knife fighting. This channel is excellent.👍🏼
