The variable sweep wing design is overall the best especially in video games
The only cons are:
High maintenance need (a literal engineering nightmare)
High probability of failure in the mechanism
If the wings are loaded then the mechanism cannot be used, so the load must be kept inside of a bomb bay or attached below the body
Almost impossible to create a stealth weapon with variable sweep wings

Problem is that the mechanism is very heavy and complicated

I gotta admit, F-14 is a great dogfighter even for its BR, I've won fights with planes such as MiG-21UPG, F-1Cs, to even Su-27s

to problems of why its not used anymore
- cost
it costs much more to produce and maintain, the addition of moving pieces makes it more prone to breaking down
- weight
the machinery to move the wings are extra weight that is obviously a bad trait for an aircraft
- internal space use
instead of putting that its more useful to slot fuel or ammo storage
- lack of advantages
yes, the ability of changing the angle of the wing is a great trait to have, but the addition of weight, cost and other other side effects do not justify the small advantage that variable wings give
- other types are better
Fixed wings in specific are much cheaper to produce, weight less, can be fitted with extra fuel or ammo and have less problems in the long run, and as army equipment goes, if its cheaper and works, it's gonna be cheaper
