So on February 27th James Gunn, director of both GoTG movies, reaffirmed his position that the Groot of the first movie literally died, and baby/teen Groot if the second movie is a new individual he calls a "son." His tweet is just now making the rounds on various news websites & such and I hadn't heard about it when I recorded this video. A lot of people (especially those with any knowledge of biology) take issue with this glib proclamation. As a former plant biology major I have to stand firmly in the "he's grown from original tissue with original cellular nuclear material via mitotic processes, thus it's the same organism, i.e. the same Groot" camp. Then again, Groot is no simple woody Earth plant, he's a fantasy intelligent, sentient, mobile alien shapeshifter that can even say five (not three) words, so it's kind of a moot point, though fun to argue regardless 😆

Edit: I like some commenters' view that focuses more on the memories of Groot. Even if the new Groot is the same continuously living organism as the original, his mental development & life experiences & memories (so far as we can assume, so far) are all fresh, making the new, from a human analogue point of view, effectively a new "person."

I wish they'd do a Groot in the style of Woody from the Toy Story sets, where he had longer legs and longer arms, but was otherwise a standard minifigure. That'd be pretty perfect.

I liked the original groot as you can add on to him, with extra plant and vine parts. I think the teenage Groot could’ve used some leg and arm printing.

I'd like the large version of Groot if it used all brown and green pieces instead of the black and grey ones it has. If the head was posable too(maybe on a ball joint like a Bionicle head?) that'd be nice also.

I have only the happy baby Groot and Lego did a superb job with the print on such a small piece! I would love to see more Groots!

I really wish that we could've gotten a Groot figure, like what we just got for teenage Groot, with the original Guardians of the Galaxy sets. Though, to make it more accurate, they should have it with the longer arm and leg moulds that they had for the old Woody (no pun intended) minifigures. Perhaps we'll someday get him as a polybag.

In dutch groot means big. So when he says I am Groot. (Ik ben Groot) It just looks like he says I am big

Fun fact: Baby Groot form and Teenage Groot form is actually the SON of the first movie Groot! (Confirmed by the director)
