It is impossible to build and operate offshore wind farms at current price levels without a subsidy.

Analysis of the accounts of firms curretly operating in this sector show very high capital and operating costs which are in excess of the price paid for their power. It's very simple, they cannot do exist without subsidies, which the consumer pays dearly for.
Few people realise just how poor these 'giant' wind farms perform and the extent which the grid has to compensate for their asynchronous generation. Wind (and solar) are not equal to conventional generation and are not a direct substitute. There is a physical limit as to how much of this type of power the grid can absorb and remain stable and reliable.
