There is one error in your explanation of the chain reaction of U235. To split one U235 Atom you need to hit it with a slow neutron. The resulting 3 neutorns however are fast neutrons. Fast neutrons don´t split U235 Atoms. Therefore you need to slow them down with a moderator like water.

Can anyone tell me how the u235 is initially split, how does the neutron hit it?

Please define the term "energy"! Without correct definitions of the key terms, everything is just a carnival of thoughts.

What I don't understand is how is it safe for people hold U-235 in their hands? Why doesn't the chain reaction initiate spontaneously? Does it require a lot of energy to initiate? Does the amount of mass have anything to do with the chain reaction being sustained? I have so many unanswered questions...

Chain reactions. Controlled and uncontrolled.

Controlled is being right and uncontrolled is being wrong. Being the chemical element is reacting.
