Awesome country song by Merle Haggard

(Lyrics)
It's a big job just gettin' by with nine kids and a wife
But I've been a workin' man dang near all my life
I'll be working long as my two hands are fit to use
I'll drink my beer in a tavern,
Sing a little bit of these working man blues

I keep my nose on the grindstone, I work hard every day
Might get a little tired on the weekend, after I draw my pay
But I'll go back workin, come Monday morning I'm right back with the crew
I'll drink a little beer that evening,
Sing a little bit of these working man blues

Sometimes I think about leaving, do a little bummin around
I wanna throw my bills out the window catch a train to another town
But I go back working gotta buy my kids a brand new pair of shoes
Yeah drink a little beer in a tavern,
Cry a little bit of these working man blues

Well Hey hey, the working man, the working man like me
I ain't never been on welfare, that's one place I won't be
Cause I'll be working long as my two hands are fit to use
I drink a little beer in a tavern
Sing a little bit of these working man blues
Yeah drink a little beer in a tavern,
Cry a little bit of these working man blues

This song is one of the few things that makes my day just a little better as a construction worker with a baby on the way 🤙

Merle's music's subject matter is relevant decades later. A true musician

Merle Haggard was the epitome of real country music. I'm only 35 but grew up on Merle. He will be sorely missed. But thankfully we will have his music forever. After the next damn meteor comes, somebody is going to find a Merle Haggard record in ten thousand years.

At the time this song came out, you could have nine kids and a wife whithout needing welfare if you were hard knockin worker.

Now if you both work two jobs it won't be hardly enough to send your only child in College... Time they are a changin... not for the best, it's a chance we still have the music...

This song reminds me of my dad as well as several others that Merle did. Im sure that Merle and all of the other greats that have gone are up there putting on one of the best concerts ever and my dad is in the front row listening to them. My dad worked hard for what he provided for 4 daughters and 1 son. I sure do miss him and anytime one of the "Hag's" songs comes on it instantly takes me back to the album collection my father had. Thank you dad, for collecting all those albums you had because without them, I would not have gotten the appreciation I have for music.

The best man that American has to offer. A legend in his own time. A talented entertainer & songwriter. We were blessed to be alive during his lifetime
