Ever wonder what it's like to mix one of the best drummers in metal, Mario Duplantier? You're about to find out!

In this clip from his Nail The Mix session, Logan Mader takes the already-amazing snare sound from "Toxic Garbage Island" by Gojira and polishes it to perfection.

He uses Pro Tools, Metric Halo Transient Control and Metric Halo Channel Strip 3,

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.

Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Meshuggah, Periphery, Neck Deep, Machine Head, Bring Me The Horizon and State Champs - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

Trust me... until you've worked with world-class source material, you have no idea what you're missing. Getting access to this stuff is a GAME CHANGER!

Unbelievable. Seven long years ago. Time goes fast.

I have found that for whatever reason… when you use a transient shaper you lose more overhead than the amount of attack you actually get. Like, say you push your snare attack up 2 db… you end up overdriving your limiter like twice that amount in comparison. I’ve never understood this. Certain transient shapers are less bad about it than others.

But anyway, i want to add that I started using mutliband transient shaping. Instead of more attack happening on the whole signal, you can boost it on particular sets of frequencies. It helped some with the limiting problems after by making sure I wasnt increasing the attack on the lows and subs.

But of course it’s really easy to overdo the boosting of transients… to the point where every single drum has that same exact pokiness in the highs… it might be nice to hear every hit perfectly and know that you didn’t lose one single hit to muddiness… but man do i hate certain modern recordings where you can tell every single drum was made to be exactly the same transient attack and is perfectly flush throughout a roll. It just sounds so far from real… sometimes you can truly make things too clear.

Logan, I am watching this like it's a calculus class for geniuses. Best stick to what I understand, and that's playing for Machine Head!

I get great sounding snares just by using a 57 on top of a good snare with a good head like the Evans Hybrid and a decent preamp.
