Gain Compensation | Mixing Tutorial

Admit it, a louder signal would sound better to many. But what many don't understand, is that louder does NOT equal better. Hearing a louder signal can actually trick your ear into thinking that the signal sounds better, when in reality, it's only louder.

By compensating the gain to match the level of the before (bypassed) sound, you will be able to tell what is going on with the effect that you did, and whether or not it sounds like an improvement, or a disaster.
In this example, I give you an idea of how it's done. I could have been off by like a fraction of a dB, but that doesn't matter. It would matter if you're laying bricks, or doing math, but that's beside the point.

BTW: If your plugin does NOT have a gain compensation knob, you can use a Gain Plugin to compensate. FL Studio has a "Fruity Gain" plugin that you can use. If you want to bypass the gain and plugin in one click, you can use something like Fruity Patcher, to put both of the plugins into one.

Is there a general order that you usually chain your effects on each mixer track? I've been running an EQ followed by a compressor and then another EQ, but idk what's most effective. Or maybe it just depends.
