One of the best songs ever; I have lots of ‘great’ memories. This performance was almost 30 years ago … so, here is my little story: I was madly in love; it really hit me. I was cautious (very cautious) and waited for the ‘right’ moment. It was a hot summer day. That girl (A) worked at a street festival in Wiesbaden. I thought ‘this is the day’. I walked up to her and confessed my love. The reaction was rather mixed: one of pleasant surprise with a shot of helplessness. I walked away with relief, met a friend, and sat down with her. Fifteen minutes later, one of A’s best female friends joined, celebrating that A got together with a fantastic guy, the DAY BEFORE. Bang! That was it for me. I went home, listened to Sting – this performance – and cried. Anyway, I still love the song – I would probably love it less had my love not failed. By the way, it continued. The next day A told me that he was a 'fun' guy, nothing serious. Last time I saw her, she was still married to him (and they have kids). Life can come up with funny stories.
