You made me paranoid about mine too. Checked mine and still the original filter fitted. I did manage to find a replacement on eBay. Just waiting for delivery. I will update when it arrives. Karl

Those rifa capacitors really go with a bang. This had happened to me many times.

Hey Tony, thankfully it was a simple fix. You could saw it open to show us the damage.
Cheers!

Hello Tony and Followers: Magnificent equipment of measurement. Years ago he had the option to buy the Philips PM6685 or the EIP (Phase Matrix) 545A, at the end Buy the EIP as it reached 20 GHz, also had a power meter and is 100% programmable, but I was in love with the Philips, and I'm still looking for one so to buy it, it's an excellent device I admire, like each of the measuring equipment manufactured by Philips. A greeting from Spain.

HI Tony
Im sure you are sneaking into my workshop at night as again you are looking at something I have :-) My CNT-85 Pendulum (same as your Phillips) unfortunately went bang as well and filled the workshop with smoke recently. Unfortunately, mine also took out that first blue capacitor, the filter and about a dozen surface mount components and tracks on the bottom side of the PCB in the PSU! It put on quite the show when it decided to retire! I am now on the lookout for one as parts or just a PSU board as it is a bit beyond repair at the moment. On the bright side I had two so I still have one of these excellent meters working on the bench. Maybe I should look at replacing the filter in this one before it goes? Anyway glad yours was an easy fix.
Cheers...Allan

The last time that happened to me, it was with a Tektronix scope.
A few weeks before that, it had happened to my Racal Millivoltmeter...
It is indeed the smell of death... it lingers on for a long time...

Hi Tony,
You're lucky that the filter is integrated in the Euro mains socket in this model. Often, the Rifa EMC X- and Y- caps are placed on the PCB in the instrument so their remnants spread all over, sometimes causing damage to the instrument itself.

Hi Tony, i could actually smell that when you showed it (once you've smelt that smell it stays with you!). On another point, those schaffner filters are pretty good. I've used them on many a design for work and they seem reliable, or should i say no reports of them going bang yet. They are quite expensive, but do the job. No real reason to replace it, unless you want to keep the EMC (CE) conformity, as the main board seems to have filtering on too.

Well that sucks. I’m sorry that happened to your new device. I know how excited you were to get it. Hopefully the smell will go away quickly.

i have a lot of old HP equipment. first things i do is replace the rifa's and netfilters.
like you know too it really smells and you need to clean a lot.

My old Philips oscilloscope recently also went out with a bang and a really bad smell.
I haven't figured out how to get the power supply board out of the scope, yet, but I did figure out I can power it off a 24V DC laptop PSU. It just seems to not make as nice of a waveform when using that... I finally upgraded to a modern (Rigol) scope, the old one is waiting until I have time for another project.

They sit there quietly then as your all relaxed, BANG! Ask allthegearnoidea!

What polish do you use, to rub the plexi windows ?

Had the same problem trying to find a replacement IEC filter for mine also. Still have not found a good filter to fit these Philips PM668x counters without modifying the case, been looking for a year. Be interesting to see if you find something.

The capacitors on old filters make a big bang ah ah

Tony, have you seen that "Tauritronics" on Marktplaats offers exactly the Eurosocket-EMI-filter that you need?
TonyAlbus
Hi Tony, can you get another filter like that if you want to keep the original equipment?
Do you have any idea how much it would cost if you have the sale?
Success there, from a direct friend from Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
