Rational numbers are real numbers that can be expressed as fractions of integers, where the denominator is not zero. Represented in the form a/b, where 'a' and 'b' are integers, and 'b' is not equal to zero, rational numbers include integers and fractions. They can be positive or negative and are crucial in representing quantities like ratios, proportions, and division results. Rational numbers form the foundation for arithmetic operations and are integral in various mathematical contexts. Understanding them is essential for navigating mathematical landscapes, from elementary school arithmetic to advanced algebra and beyond.
