Giovanni Benedetto Platti (c. 1697 – 11 January 1763) was an Italian composer, oboist, and instrumentalist who spent much of his career in Germany. His work is known for bridging the Baroque and early Classical eras, and he made significant contributions to the development of instrumental music during this transitional period.

Platti initially worked in Venice, where he was exposed to the vibrant musical scene, including the works of Vivaldi and other prominent composers. In 1722, Platti moved to Würzburg, Germany, to serve at the court of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn. He continued to work at the Würzburg court under subsequent prince-bishops. Platti was a versatile musician at the court, performing as an oboist, violinist, and cellist, and also composing a variety of works.

Giovanni Benedetto Platti composed a wide range of music, including concertos, sonatas, and vocal works, with particularly noteworthy contributions to the oboe repertoire. His music reflects the transition from the Baroque to the Classical style, often featuring expressive melodies, elegant phrasing, and clear forms characteristic of the emerging Classical era. Some of his significant works include his oboe concertos, cello concertos, and harpsichord concertos, while his chamber music, especially sonatas for various instruments, also showcases his compositional skill.

Joy, beauty, sensitivity: gifts from the talented generation of Baroque musicians of the first half of the 18th century.

I love the pathos and melodic quality of Platti's writing. It feels like these are operas written for orchestra.

When I was 15 I traveld to Wurzburg in Bayern to visitr the G:B. Tiepolo frescoes in the Residenz. The ballroom, the stairway, endless figures of lightly transparently coloured figures, like constantly moving. the four corners of the world, Apollo's Sun chariot, all gazing in the space. But always light, witty, transparent. Later I learned that Platti was one of the musicians there, and this sense of light smile, tender colours and sweet melancholy, and a noble yet heroic temperament, well, it all came together.
