Cattle at a feedyard receive a balanced diet formulated by ruminant nutritionists. One ingredient in that diet is steam-flaked corn. Cattle Empire nutritionist Dr. Tim Murphy explains why we flake the corn and what role it plays in the cattle's diet.

Steam-flaking makes corn more susceptible of fermentation (by bacteria) in the rumen. In cattle, that is. Does that mean that it's also more susceptible to fermentation in the hind gt of horses, instead of enzymatic digestion in the small intestine?

I think I noticed this in my horse, but they always say that steam-flaked corn is easily digestible, so it doesn't reach the hind gut. Seeing this video I'm starting to think that that is mostly true for cows (or other ruminants), but not so much for horses and other monogastric animals.
