SAVING AN OLDSMOBILE FROM A BARN (PART 1)

So there isastory that comes along with this car, it wasn't something I drove past, or even knew existed where it was. I had no connection to this machine or the people that had her. But , lets rewind. Last week was just like any other for the Wolf of Rust. Laid back in the office doing some paper work and getting inventory accounted for. There was a knock on the window and Tim stepped up to handle the customer. He was here to cash in some scrap metal, and asked about our "car prices" while making small talk. he made mention of an oldsmobile he had laying around and my ears perked up. I listened, they averaged up the weight of the car and the offer was placed on the table.. But it wasnt good. He started talking about the car again, it was worth more then that! My mother drove it for years! I cant take it the junkyard for that... Just before he left, I jumped up and made my way over. I asked about the car, the condition, the miles, why it was parked , etc etc. The story turned a little sad, as I learned the passing of his mother left the car sitting in the barn. He said it was an older out of style unit and his kids poked fun at him for even wanting to drive it. So there it sat. One attempt had been made at selling, although stupid offers and tire kickers quickly dropped that ball. I knew, while I didnt have the room or the time at the moment.. I couldnt let this gem sit and rot any longer.. it must come home.. With me.. So here we go! Lets begin!

Once you get it running, all pile in for "Bingo Night" at the local Lodge and park it next to the K cars and Ford Tempos.

Seeing that sure brings back the memories! These cars used to be on every used car lot everywhere. They were crazy popular until the 1990s and they started looking dated, the mileages started getting high, and nobody wanted them anymore! They are smooth and comfortable (same body as the DeVille) and a way better bang for the buck than the Buick Park Ave when new! Only big problem I recall with them was early transmission failures. Should be a cheap project to get going again. Enjoy it!

So glad to find this. H-body cars are really great. I have a 1995 Oldsmobile 98 and I adore it. Comfortable, sold, drives beautifully and feels so majestic. Your 1985 was the first year H-body. The transaxle was new and GM limited the power to 125hp that first year, because they wanted no transmission troubles. The power of the engine and the strength of the transaxle grew year after year. My 1995 has 205hp. The Pontiac GXP used the same basic transmission with 303hp. They can be built to withstand far more. Anyway, you have found a wonderful car. I hope you treat it with respect.

One of GM's better offerings from the day. Really ahead of their time in some ways. Wonderful all around cars...good gas mileage, good ride, and stylish.

Awesome find. That should be a KEEPER. To find one in that condition is almost unheard of. Interior looks fantastic. Jay you should definitely keep that car. Be an awesome road car and surprisingly get very good gas mileage. Great find

The 98 and Buick Park Avenue were the GM C-body. My mom had an '87 when I was a kid. I might still have some spare parts at her house

I think it's rare a car was parked in a barn that had nothing wrong with it. That looks to be a senior citizen car, as was most Oldsmobiles.

It was a different roofline, that’s what makes it special.

That's the H platform we have a 1990 Buick we picked up for $ 600.00. Runs and drives beautifully and gets 30 mpg on the highway and air blows cold . Has 3.8 and now has 175 K and uses no oil.

I had a 1989 Oldsmobile Royal 88 that I had found in a barn on a friend's property back when I was in high school. It was their grandpa's car that was left to set after he had gotten Alzheimer's. The paint was faded and there were dings all over it. The headliner was falling down and the driver's side door would not open, along with the radiator being bad and all of the struts were shot. It had a ton of other issues as well. I turned it into a project car and completely restored it. I completely re-did the interior with along with a new headliner and had completely restored the exterior by filling in the dings, sanding it down and repainting the entire thing. I also restored all of the chrome trim. Afterwards, the car looked as if it had come off of the lot. The car was cherry red in color. These Oldsmobile's are very nice cars and drive really nice. The 3800 V6 engine GM put in their cars are almost bullet proof.

First one I ever saw was that same color. Belonged to our shop teacher and he brought it in for the class to work on. Brave man!

Wow that's nice. That should clean up really good. That would either be a C-body or a H-body.
