How much it cost to buy my first CNC Milling Machine!?

This is my first time buying a CNC machine. It cost 8600 to buy and repair, 800 for a rigger. Dont question my strength ever.

disclaimer: Do not purchase any industrial equipment based on the numbers you see here, i bought knowing repair was needed and that i could do the job, you may not know or be able too. Used VMCs are typically more expensive, but i bought in a buyers market.

Fadal are one of the first CNC machines I learned to use in college for Machine Tool and Computer Aided Manufacturing Technology. Great machines and can do the job. They are a little finicky when you g code isn’t perfect. Fadal has there own form of G code specifics but they have been around for a very long time so I’m sure there is a lot of open source stuff. If you find that in the future you want to grow into something a little easier Haas are great cheap machines. I have working in the field for 7 years and used Mastercam cad/cam software mostly.

The biggest things to stress:
When jogging any CNC machine is always make sure you are in .0001 or .001 feed.
When proofing any program new always step your program line by line and always in .001 feed.
If you can perfect this you will almost never crash the machine. If you do don’t beat yourself up...all good and great machinists have done it.

Good luck!

Can't wait to see it cleaned up. That machine looks pretty cool.

$8600 seems like a lot for what you got. I got a bigger machine (32x20x20 15HP spindle, 5HP axis drives, 24 spot tool changer) for $1500 because the previous owner had electronics issues and got fed up with it. The electronics issues were really easy for me to solve, and now I'm working on the mechanical side. I pretty much have the machine stripped right down now (table off, saddle off) and cleaning everything and putting it back together. In a lot of ways, mine is in similar shape to yours - needs a complete cleaning and some mechanical repairs as well. Basically a complete tear down / clean up / rebuild. Of course being a bigger machine, it's a lot harder to work on - everything is bigger and heavier. I have to laugh at some of your commentary, as I've had the very same thoughts. Nice to see your machine running - I'm hoping mine will be running in a few months. No small project rebuilding a VMC!

back in the 90s ... this size was sold as VMC 40 ( VMC 2016 ) - 20 / 16 :) I have one from 1995 as VMC40 :) although it has a 21 tool changer Yours uses a 3 phase servo ... my old one has a DC servo :)

Run this thing at 50% rapids on the control. Your bearings will last longer and thank you. I have nothing but Fadals in my shop.

Did you need to configure your garage for 220 3PH electrical service? Belt driven spindles are OK... However, many of the newer machines, and almost all of the higher-end models are direct drive to a gearbox on the spindle... Some are even direct to the spindle itself now, although I'm not sure how that works... When you get to the point where you absolutely need to buy an entirely new machine (and that WILL happen sooner than you think, rest assured), Haas is the way to go... They have a wide spectrum of CNCs to handle every aspect of your machining needs...

Good choice. I don't know why all these other guys are so hyped about Haas machines when used Fadals are a heck of a deal.

how about the salary that a worker can use mastercam to create the g code and his operating is ok

Thought you had a garage at your home that you were moving the machine to -looks like a warehouse. Been looking to rent a space to put a Haas, seen a few buildings like the one you're in, but never tried to rent because I believed I wouldn't be allowed to work on my cars or run CNC machinery.

can you share the name of the rigging company and about how much that would cost?

Congratulations. How do you like the Fadal and how do you load programs to it? I’ve worked for aerospace companies and haven’t hand the chance to operate a fadal, I have only used Mori doosan and haas.

Nice vide dude. But where do you begin looking for a CNC milling machine like that?

Let me know if you need to source any basic fadal programming books btw...might still have mine or might be able to get some from my college.
