As an epidemiologist I can say that this is a concern and raising it to a continental concern makes sense for operational, funding, etc purposes. But 1) this is a controllable disease, its mode of transmission make it possible to break transmission chains through ring vaccination, contact tracing etc. so this won’t be like other respiratory viruses and 2) we have a vaccine already available so time is still on our side. That being said, current conflits in the eastern provinces of DRC have weakened the local health systems so support is greatly needed from international organizations.

Even countries as far as South Africa affected due to in continent migration: 18 cases with 3 deaths. Treatable with early intervention in however I fear for the under developed countries: we have to treat it with the same urgency irrespective of region and not think it will not spread globally

Missed the main point: this is clade I mpox in Africa, which causes up to a 10% fatality rate. What we have in Europe and the US right now is clade II, which is nowhere near as deadly.

Mpox has been in the US since 2022. We have vaccines that work. If you’re worried, your state’s public health department have the vaccinations already or know how to get them. I’ve had the vaccine, it’s easy af.

The nations mentioned in Africa on the other hand don’t have the systems in place to distribute the vaccines, hence the spread.
