If you play a demi-human, an elf for this example, are you expected to behave, think like, and act like an elf 24/7? Are you punished for not being "elfy-enough"? Does your DM threaten to transform you into a human if you dont start acting more like the DM thinks elves are supposed to act? No? Then why do people think that's how alignment is treated? Alignment is important and every player should incorporate their character's moral compass (or lack thereof) into their fantasy characters personality. But how you do that, and what you should be careful of is what you need to be aware of. Hopefully this brief videos touches on the most important tips and insight into errors I have experienced. I hope it helps you! And thanks for watching!

Alignment is a prime topic to discuss in Session Zero. Put your expectations on the table and listen to player feedback. Establish common definitions and expectations BEFORE the campaign gets rolling and no one will have much latitude to start splitting hairs, especially the cleric(s) in the party. You cannot willy-nilly flout the creed of your deity and expect to keep on receiving your daily allotment of spells.

Getting closer to your first 1K and well deserved! Now, on to the topic at hand, understanding the aligments and its moral implications you can effectively paly the commoners, nobility and laws accurately.

Completely agree! Alignment is a tool, a guideline for character creation, but it shouldn't be the absolute law from wich you can't ever be free while roleplaying. Another excellent video added to the rooster Aten, cheers!

I remember my first couple years as a player, I usually played Chaotic Good or Neutral Good, I decided to play a Neutral Evil character. After two game sessions, the DM pointed out that despite my Alignment on paper, I was still playing " Good". I changed my Alignment on paper to reflect that ( back to same ol') . As you said though, alignment should be a tendency towards, as apposed to doctrine. It's all mute now. We dropped the idea of Alignment year's ago. 🤘😁🖖🇨🇦

Stumbled on this, heck I really like how you put this. There are so many videos on alignment! But this was so clearly thought out and really beneficial to the discussion. It's not just "one more alignment video" =) Thanks!

Well said.
I like to say a character is CN with good tendencies that allows more wiggle room for players to play their character.

I generally use undead, and cult of Orcus members bent on kidnapping, cannibalism, and sacrificing young girls as antagonists in my campaign world. It makes it pretty easy for the (new player)PC's to remain morally focused. The three main NPC's of the group are Chaotic Good, Neutral Good, and Lawful Good and act as commentary on PC actions when they stray too far. The PC actions are viewed and judged by their social peers just like real life, with mixed reactions and responses just like real life.

I love playing evil characters, few of my fellow players even remotely suspect the truth... take care of your minions, they'll take care of you. Ruthlessness and extreme measures have their place, but only when actually needed.

+1 and Sub for outstanding coverage of an often misunderstood aspect of the game.

Good comment about "Gotcha DMs."

I took alignment be more of a training wheel than a set thing.

I feel like people have been getting it backwards. Alignment shouldn't dictate actions. Actions should dictate Alignment.

That doesn't mean that you can't compromise on your philosophy if required. (And please don't play your Alignment to a fault) But if repeated actions reflect a change in their philosophy, that should result in an alignment change.

Though I don't like how older editions discouraged alignment change. Characters will feel static if their philosophy isn't allowed to change.

I really hate the "Lawful Good can commit horrible acts" sentiment. I think when you're committing horrible acts, you're not good.

Ah the difference between LAWFUL good and lawful GOOD.
